The Meat and Poultry Processing Technical Assistance Program (MPPTA) is an initiative designed to help stakeholders in the meat and poultry market, with a heavy focus on small, rural, and Tribally owned processors. Special Guest: Carly Griffith Hotvedt @carlyforok , J.D., M.P.A. is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and a nationally recognized expert in Tribal food and agriculture law and policy. She serves as Executive Director of the Indigenous Food and Agriculture Initiative at the University of Arkansas School of Law, where she works at the intersection of tribal sovereignty, agriculture policy, and economic development. 

Throughout her career, Carly has advised the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the White House Domestic Policy Council, and members of Congress on Tribal food systems, land management, and Farm Bill policy. She has also led major initiatives with tribal governments to strengthen food sovereignty and agricultural economies across Indian Country. 

Before her national policy work, Carly served as Assistant Attorney General for the Muscogee (Creek) Nation and later became Director of Agriculture and Natural Resources, where she built programs, secured major funding, and helped expand Tribal agricultural development. 

A lawyer, policy strategist, and advocate, Carly is widely recognized as a leading voice on the future of Tribal food systems and sovereignty.

Applications Are Now Open! The Indigenous Food So Applications Are Now Open!

The Indigenous Food Sovereignty Emerging Leaders Program (IFSELP) is returning June 7–26, 2026, on the NDSU Campus in Fargo, ND, and we’re looking for the next cohort of leaders!

IFSELP is a fully funded program designed for youth, ages 18–24, interested in learning more about food sovereignty and community health through preserving Indigenous food systems, traditions, and knowledge.

Cost: FREE- travel, lodging, and meals are covered
Stipend: $3,000

Application Deadline: March 22, 2026, at 11:59 CST

🔶 We’ve got an analysis of the amendments that were made in the markup of the farm bill language that dropped last month. We will also be hosting a webinar on March 18th diving deep into any questions you might have. 

🔶There’s a Senate Agriculture committee hearing for potential issues related to Tribal food and ag.

🔸The BIA has set dates for Tribes to submit applications for the Tribal Self-Governance Program.

🔸If you are a third-year law student, or recent law school grad, we’re looking for a law and policy fellow here at IFAI!
