The Intertribal Agriculture Council (IAC) is spotlighting the growing momentum of poultry production across Indian Country, driven by the dedication and innovation of its Technical Assistance Specialists. In the most recent episode of the “Rooted Wisdom” podcast, two current and one former IAC specialists—Katherine Minthorn, Amelia Evans-Brown, and Carrie Freeman—share their personal journeys and professional insights into the challenges and successes of poultry farming in Tribal communities. 

When discussing food sovereignty, Minthorn said, “More than anything, number one, to be able to feed ourselves—and prove to the children that they are a vital part of their own existence.”  Minthorn, who co-founded an egg producer’s cooperative on the Umatilla Indian Reservation, emphasized the importance of community, education, and resilience in building a sustainable poultry operation. 

The podcast episode highlights the diverse experiences of the three women, from overcoming environmental barriers in Alaska to integrating traditional knowledge and humor into poultry education in the Northeast. The IAC team also announced the launch of a Google Meet support group, offering weekly sessions to provide technical assistance and foster collaboration among Tribal poultry producers. 

As interest in poultry production continues to rise in Indian Country—driven by concerns over protein security and the affordability of raising chickens—IAC and IFAI remain committed to empowering Tribal communities with the tools, knowledge, and support needed to thrive.
